The increase in number of ticketless passengers in the air-conditioned local, first class coaches of the Central Railway is causing inconvenience to passengers who have tickets. Around 20,000 ticketless passengers were caught in the operation conducted in the month of April. Central Railway collected a fine of INR 86 lakhs from ticketless passengers.


More passengers are seen opting air-conditioned local trains on the Central Railway. Along with it, the number of ticketless passengers has also increased. During rush hours, passengers are finding it difficult to find seats in air-conditioned local trains even after paying extra. Infiltration of ticketless passengers increased as ticket checking was not carried out in first class, air-conditioned locales.

To reduce these intrusions, daily ticket checking was tightened, a large team of ticket inspectors went to every railway station and checked every local compartment. From this, the Mumbai division found 20,760 ticketless passengers in April from which INR 86.18 lakh was collected through this.

Passengers caught travelling without ticket

  • First Class Travel on Second Class Ticket: 12,213
  • Ticketless in Air-Conditioned Local: 2,805
  • Non-A/C First Class Non-Ticket: 5,742
