Central Railways (CR) has decided to set up 35 new water vending machines at 34 railway stations in Mumbai division to quench the thirst of railway passengers and provide them with cheap and pure water while commuting in this scorching heat.

Now as the summer approaches, many commuters who travel by local trains in Mumbai have requested to resume the RO drinking water plants at the railway stations that were shut in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Once these machines are operational, passengers will no longer need to purchase bottled water. Tenders have been invited for setting up the machine and the process to install them will be completed soon to avoid passenger inconvenience.

Thane, which sees a higher commuter footfall, will get two such machines, said officials.

The dispensers will come up at major stations on the main line, harbour line, the Diva-Vasai line, Matheran, and even remote Pen, Kalamboli, Kasara and Lonavala. The machines will remain in place for five years, official added.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched a water vending machine to provide drinking water to railway passengers at a cost of one rupee. These machines have not yet started after being shut down ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Last year, around same time, the reverse osmosis (RO) plants were installed at the railway stations so that a maximum number of people can utilise the purified drinking water to quench their thirst.
