Last year on September 29, 2017, 23 people lost their lives in a stampede on the narrow Elphinstone foot-over bridge. When the incident happened, it was raining and passengers waited on the Elphinstone foot-over bridge, which was then followed by rumours like the bridge would collapse with the overload, that caused the stampede and deaths.

In order to avoid any such untoward incidents, the Central Railway has decided to deploy extra staff on foot-over bridges during monsoons which will look after the crowd.

Amongst the 13 foot-over bridges identified by the Central Railway; Dadar, Parel, Currey Road, Chinchpokli, Ghatkopar, and Kurla will also be considered as these stations are congested and used frequently by commuters. Further, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will set up a weather monitoring system inside the railway stations which will pass on hourly monsoon updates to commuters.

DK Sharma, general manager, central railways told Hindustan Times

We have informed railway officials to identify and determine land inside railway stations for setting up of weather monitoring system. We will be receiving ‘Nowcast’ updates from the IMD through the system and accordingly will determine the local train operations."

According to reports, all railway officials, from the general manager to station masters and the motormen will be informed about the weather conditions through live updates.
