On Thursday, September 30, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced to hold a trial run for the Metro-3 railway line at Marol Maroshi on an underground track by early next year.

This development comes amid a stalemate between the Centre and state government over the Kanjurmarg land for the car shed. Clarifying it, the CMO’s statement said the site for the trial run is not the same as the one on which the controversial car shed for the Metro line was to be located before it was shelved.

Thackeray also instructed the authorities to complete the Colaba-SEEPZ Metro trial runs without touching a single tree in Aarey for the trials for the Metro-3 line which runs between Colaba and SEEPZ.

He stated that the location was outside the Aarey Colony forest and an underground path for the line is being constructed at Marol-Maroshi.

This 33.5-km-long line will be the first underground Metro in Mumbai.

“In order to solve the problem of traffic congestion in South Mumbai, it has been decided to conduct trial run of the Colaba-SEEPZ metro line at Marol Maroshi,” said the release.

An eight-coach train has been built at Shree City in Andhra Pradesh. It has undergone technical tests at the site. It will be brought to Mumbai soon for the trial runs. Once done, 31 such trains will run on the route, the CM said.

For those unaware, in October 2019, Thackeray had announced that he was scrapping the construction of a car shed at Aarey Milk Colony to save the forest in the area. Thackeray had announced that the car shed would be moved to Kanjurmarg, but the move was stayed by the Bombay High Court in December 2020.
