Amidst the coronavirus crisis and people losing jobs, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) has sacked 159 employees so far.

During the lockdown, the BEST had suggested 100 per cent attendance for all the employees of the transport service. However, the attendance was only 15 per cent by the employees, not only in the transport but in the electricity department as well. By July-end, 112 employees were sacked.

Meanwhile, as per reports, with the lockdown relaxations, the BEST has gained over four lakh commuters in a month and its ridership has touched 14 lakhs.

So far, it has been operating its full fleet of 3,500 buses which includes 120 double-deckers. The BEST undertaking has 27 bus depots, 51 bus stations and 112 bus terminals. With the Maharashtra government launching the 'Mission Begin Again' initiative on June 8, BEST started 2,132 buses on 82 routes in the city of Mumbai for workers travelling for the essential services.

The double-decker buses of BEST have a seating capacity for 90 passengers but only 45 passengers were permitted in each bus in order to maintain social distancing.

Over the last three months, BEST has continued to increase the number of buses on the roads to meet the demands with regards to the surge in the number of people travelling to their workplaces.
