Over the last few months, amidst the tough times of coronavirus lockdown, Mumbai's BEST has been the only reliable mode of transportation for many across Mumbai. Employees who offer essential services used the buses run by BEST to ensure they reach their work on time. On the other hand, BEST has crossed the city limits and provided services from areas like Virar, Asangaon and others.

However, some employees of BEST were infected by the coronavirus and as per reports, 54 employees have died due to COVID-19 infection. The report was released by BEST Joint Workers Action Committee which has also clarified that silent protest will be held at depots and establishments from June 11 to June 13, 2020, to emphasise on various demands related to the health of the BEST employees.

Committee leader Shashank Rao clarified that this was being ignored despite repeated inquiries. Following are the demands made by the committee:

  • Details of BEST employees affected with coronavirus should be disclosed.
  • The legal heir of the concerned should be taken into the service of the undertaking immediately as declared.
  • Insurance cover of ₹50 lakhs should be provided.
  • Disciplinary action should be stopped.
  • Medical examination centre should be started at every bus depot.

Mumbai has been the worst affected city in India and the number of coronavirus cases has increasing day by day. On June 8, 2020, the tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 50,000-mark. Keeping this in mind, the BMC has sealed areas and buildings in Mumbai. The count in the state of Maharashtra reached more than 80,000.
