On Tuesday, May 13, Indian Railways resumed its passenger train services amid the coronavirus lockdown. The first that left for Delhi from Mumbai Central railway station carried 1,107 passengers and commenced the journey between the two cities around 50 days after the services were suspended due to the lockdown.

Western Railway spokesperson stated a total of 1,487 passengers had booked tickets for the fully-air conditioned train, which departed at 5:30 pm, out of which 97 boarded the train at Surat, 83 boarded at Vadodara, 23 at Ratlam and 177 at Kota junction en-route Delhi.

"All passengers were compulsorily screened and only asymptomatic passengers were allowed to board the train," said a WR spokesperson.

The railway personnel had made special arrangements, including making squares for the passengers in and out of the station so that they could move forward in an orderly manner. Alongside, the passengers were asked if they had downloaded the Aarogya Setu app and as per the officials, most of them answered in the affirmative.

The Mumbai Central-Delhi train was one of the special trains that began their journey, however, it was not smooth for all the passengers. Some passengers complained that despite reaching early at the station, the people who were late were allowed to board the train before them. Some were made to wait inside a ticket booking hall and even complained of the lack of water and proper toilet facilities.

After the lockdown came into force on March 25, Railways has only been operating services for goods and parcels. On May 1, it started operating 'Shramik Special' trains, mainly for migrant labourers.
