Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the traffic in both, the financial capital Mumbai and national capital New Delhi, has witnessed a significant decline. Mumbai, the hustling city, recorded an average 46 per cent decline in congestion during the morning rush hour on Tuesday. Usually, Mumbai's congestion level is at 60-80 per cent between 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

The data was recorded by traffic-tracker TomTom International. TomTom International tracks congestion as a measure of how long it takes compared to when the traffic is flowing freely. So, if the congestion reading shows 50 per cent, it means that the trip will take 50 per cent longer as compared to the uncongested conditions.

On the other hand, New Delhi’s data showed an average 34 per cent decline in congestion during the morning.

The decline can be partially addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's appeal on Monday where he had asked people to restrict travelling.

“I appeal to the people to avoid public places, trains and buses, if not needed,” the Maharashtra CM had said on his social media account.

He also stated that the coming 10-15 days were very crucial for the state. The data of every country that has been infected shows that the virus is most spread in the third and fourth weeks.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had stated that Maharashtra had entered in Phase Two of COVID-19 outbreak

“We are in phase 2 (of the coronavirus outbreak) and steps are being taken to ensure that the situation is not advanced into phase 3,” Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope.

Traffic data for 2019 shows that Mumbai is the fourth most congested city in the world with a congestion level of 65 per cent whereas national capital, New Delhi was eighth.

While the vehicular traffic has come down, the 50 per cent rule for private offices which was imposed to bring down the spread of coronavirus in Mumbai has driven down ridership by 15 per cent on local trains.
