Even as Maharashtra continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic, passenger traffic at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is seeing a significant increase.

A press statement issued by CSMIA reveals that around 72,61,158 passengers passed through the airport via a total of 77,797 flights in the first six months of 2021. These figures take both domestic and international flights into account. Overall, passenger traffic has reportedly surged by 60 per cent in the period.

Dubai was the most popular destination for flyers with a total of 2,13,770 passengers flying to and from CSMIA. Newark (U.S.) was the second most popular spot with 88,010 passengers followed by London Heathrow with 75,470 passengers.

As for domestic locations, Delhi emerged as the top location with 9,46,890 passengers flying to and from CSMIA. Goa and Bengaluru were ranked as the second and third most frequented cities with 5,42,350 and 4,32,180 passengers, respectively.

Multiple Indian states have eased travel restrictions to some extent, although most still require a negative RT-PCR test that is no older than 72 hours upon arrival.

CSMIA has 30 RT-PCR testing counters at Terminal 2 for domestic and international passengers. The addition of new domestic routes like Dharbhanga, Adampur, and Kalaburagi have also contributed to the increase in passengers.
