After keeping the rates static for two days, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have announced another hike in the price of fuel.

On Friday, January 22, petrol and diesel prices increased again by 22-27 paise per litre. Following today’s rate revision, petrol prices were hiked by 22-25 paise a litre while the price of diesel was raised by 23-27 paise across major metro cities of the country.

With this revision, the cost of petrol per litre in Mumbai is also at its record high of INR 92.04 per litre, while a litre of diesel costs INR 82.40. With this, the price of petrol, as well as diesel, touched new highs.

This is a double whammy for Mumbaikars. With the local trains still not functional for the general public in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, most people have to use other modes to get to their workplace. The increased price will surely mark a dent in their monthly expenses.

This is the third price hike of petrol and diesel in the last 20 days. The price hike came as a result of the resumption of daily price revisions by state-owned fuel retailers like Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) starting January 6 after nearly a month-long hiatus.

The rates of fuel have been increased across the country varying from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.
