The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, September 1, has decided to undertake maintenance work on the newly-constructed Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road, owing to this, traffic is expected to be disrupted.

The move came a day after a 34-year-old man died and another 27-year-old sustained severe injuries after their two-wheeler skidded on the bridge.

The northbound stretch will remain closed till Sunday. However, the southbound stretch will be shut for a few days for repair after work on the northbound stretch is completed, said officials.

Later, the Mumbai Traffic Police on Wednesday night issued a notification banning movement of two-wheelers on the bridge from Thursday till October 1. The notification also stated that the speed limit for remaining vehicles will be 30 to 50 km per hour.

The BMC has also decided to install CCTV cameras, additional speed bumps and rumblers and make the surface rough.

However, it has been partially shut down for extensive repairs after numerous complaints of two-wheelers skidding and a fatal bike accident earlier in the week.

The 2.9-km flyover, constructed by BMC was thrown open to light vehicles (up to 3 m) on August 1 three years after missing its deadline. It has helped decrease travel time for motorists heading towards Navi Mumbai from Ghatkopar.

According to reports, the INR 713 crores Mumbai flyover was inaugurated just a month ago by Uddhav Thackeray. Thackeray on the day of the inauguration had also asked the BMC officials to make the surface of the flyover smooth.

Later, on August 4, BJP corporator wrote a letter to mayor Kishori Pednekar and municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, pointing at the poor quality of construction work by the contractor.
