The Western Railway’s Harbour Line extension from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to the Borivali railway station is expected to begin in January 2022. The survey work for the same is likely to be completed before the year-end.

Earlier, it was reported that an 'alignment survey' took place as a prelude to the construction of rail line on the harbour route between Goregaon and Borivali.

Currently, the Harbour Line connects to Goregaon station. It will be extended from there till Borivali railway station. The extension of the Harbour Line will provide a direct connection to those residing in Borivali to CSMT.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Central Railways (CR) operated one service between CSMT to Borivali. Right now, if one has to travel to CSMT from Borivali, they have to change their trains to reach their destination. It becomes hectic for the commuters, especially during peak hours.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation had proposed the 7.08-km of the Harbour Line extension project. The extension project is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III). In 2019, the railway board granted this project, and its estimated cost is INR 745.31 crores. The work will be executed by the Western Railways (WR).

Meanwhile, the budget for 97 stabling lines for Central and Western Railways is INR 485 crores. Out of the 97 stabling lines, 16 will be for Western Railways.
