Mumbai is a city connected through the rail network where the local trains are considered to be the lifeline of the citizens. Lakhs of Mumbaikars use these trains every day to travel in the city which makes the means of transport crowded often. Therefore, in order to control the crowd and bring down the number of rail accidents due to overcrowding, Bombay High Court has asked the Railways to start a double-decker local train between Western Railways’ Virar and Churchgate stations on a trial basis.

The demand was raised during a hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding problems of handicapped passengers, railway accidents, foot over bridges, etc., which was headed by the bench of Judges Naresh Patil and Girish Kulkarni.

Accordingly, the court stated that Railways are considered to be Mumbai city’s lifeline and in order to improve the quality of transportation and reduce the issue of overcrowded trains. The court had asked Railways to come up with some viable options to resolve the issue.

Earlier, Railways had told that it is impossible to solve the problem of overcrowded trains and control them. In response, the court answered saying that Japan’s Tokyo is the world’s most populated city and still they are managing the crowd during transportation, and directed the transport wing to study Tokyo’s rail network and understand their strategy to manage the crowd.

Officials were also asked to take stern action against the people performing stunts in local trains in order to control the number of deaths by rail accidents.
