Frequent flyer Bhavesh Javeri was in for the surprise of a lifetime on his journey from Mumbai to Dubai on May 19. He travelled as the lone passenger on the Emirates flight EK501 by paying the economy class ticket cost of ₹18,000. He said that the ticket was booked a week in advance.

Javeri, 40, was returning to the United Arab Emirates after meeting his parents who live in Breach Candy.

“I normally book a business class ticket, but I thought, why not book an economy seat, the flight would have only a few passengers,” he said.

He also detailed his experience as he boarded the flight with flight attendants reportedly applauding him while the pilot joked saying, “Should I give you a tour of the entire plane?” Meanwhile, the commander of the flight waved at him from the cockpit.

He also received personalized inflight messages since he was the only passenger on the flight. “Mr Javeri, please fasten your seat belt,” for example.

“After landing, I walked out leisurely and picked up my bag, the only one lying next to a conveyor belt,” Javeri added.

So how did Javeri manage to fly to Dubai on a flight with no other passengers? Well, this has everything to do with the coronavirus-related restrictions put in place by the UAE which only allows members of diplomatic missions, its citizens, and holders of the UAE Golden Visa into its territory.

Javeri holds a UAE Golden Visa which meant that he was allowed into Dubai, even if there weren’t any other passengers on board.

“I had flown a charter flight from Dubai to Mumbai last June with nine passengers on a 14-seater aircraft. But it was nowhere close to this experience,” he added.

Javeri was reportedly stopped as he approached Mumbai Airport since his ticket didn’t contain the date of travel. After contacting Emirates, he was informed by the staff that the flight was waiting for him.

It’s worth pointing out that Emirates was using a Boeing 777 airline which burnt nearly 17 tonnes of fuel costing lakhs to fly this lone passenger, as per TOI.
