Inauguration of Metro Line 2B Phase Delayed Due to Pending Safety Certificate
SHARES

The state government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had planned to inaugurate the first phase of Metro Line 2B from Diamond Garden to Mandalay on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to do the honours. To meet this timeline, the process of obtaining the mandatory safety certificate was fast-tracked. However, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has yet to issue the certificate, causing the planned inauguration to be postponed.

On the same day, the Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade section of Metro Line 3 will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, commuters will have to wait a little longer for the Diamond Garden to Mandalay Metro service, as inspections and final safety checks are still underway. MMRDA is expected to announce a new inauguration date soon.

Metro Line 2B is an extension of the Dahisar-Andheri West Metro 2A line. It spans 23 km with 22 elevated stations and is being developed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Diamond Garden to Mandalay (5.6 km)

  • Phase 2: Diamond Garden to Andheri West

The first phase includes stations at Mandalay, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. Testing of trains and systems between Diamond Garden and Mandalay began in April 2025, and is now in its final stage. A 31-acre car shed at Mandalay will house up to 72 metro trains for this corridor.

'Mumbai 1' Smart Card Launched

In a major boost to public transport integration, the state government has launched the Mumbai 1 Smart Card, allowing seamless travel across multiple modes from ST buses, BEST buses, local trains, Metro, to Monorail. This initiative eliminates the need for multiple tickets and cards, making commuting across Mumbai and nearby cities like Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Mira-Bhayander more convenient. The card and its companion app will be available for public use after Wednesday's official launch by Prime Minister Modi.
