India’s first engineless locomotive 'Train 18' to be inaugurated today

Built at the cost of ₹100 crore, the engineless train will have a stainless steel car body with LHB as the base design. The train is being considered as an alternative to the Shatabdi Express on the Indian Railway Network.

The wait for the advanced engineless train will soon be over as the much awaited semi-high speed train for inter-city travel Codenamed Train 18 is set to be inaugurated on October 29. The Integral Coach Factory General Manager S.Mani confirmed that they had planned to unveil the train on October 29.

Meanwhile, he added that the train will run on a trial basis for two months and for the time being, the train will undergo some tests. If the results are satisfactory, then the train will be opened for passenger service.

Train 18 has been named after the year it was built in and is a self-propelled train which will run at the top speed of 160 kmph. The locomotive is a 100 per cent ‘Make in India’ project and has been manufactured by ICF, Chennai.

Built at the cost of ₹100 crore, the engineless train will have a stainless steel car body with LHB as the base design. The train will be fully air-conditioned and will consist of 16 chair-car type coaches out of which two will be executive chair cars and 14 non-executive chair cars.

Amongst which, the executive chair will be able to seat 56 passengers, whereas the non-executive chairs will accommodate 78 passengers.

The 16-coach Train 18 has a total seating capacity of 1,128 passengers. With the addition of the engineless train, it is said that it will eventually replace the Shatabdi Express on the Indian rail network.
