Railways and MMRDA to begin crucial pre-monsoon work soon

Every year during monsoon, the service of local trains, which are considered the lifeline of Mumbai, gets disrupted due to waterlogging on the tracks. This year during monsoon the woes of the commuters travelling by local may increase many folds. The reason for the same is that the rail authorities have not been able to carry out the plan maintenance work that will help them to deal with the waterlogging because of the coronavirus update.

Railways had set a deadline of the first week of June for Central and Western Railway to take necessary measures but with the lockdown in place, the work has not started as yet. After the lockdown will be lifted, the rail authorities will have a herculean task to finish the pending work before the deadline.

There are 53 sewers between Western Railway's Churchgate and Virar whereas there are 79 sewers on the Central line. The rail corporation cleans these sewers before monsoon to avoid waterlogging and is assisted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the same.

These railway areas are at high risk of waterlogging every year:

  • Grant Road
  • Prabhadevi
  • Dadar
  • Matunga-Mahim
  • Bandra-Khar
  • Andheri-Jogeshwari
  • Virar-Vasai
  • Masjid-Dadar
  • Matunga-Ghatkopar
  • Mulund-Kalwa
  • Badlapur-Ambernath

Along with the task to clean the sewers, the rail corporation also requires to increase the height of railway tracks at some areas, install slippers, ensure the proper functioning of signal service, check overhead wires, cut bushes on either side of railway tracks, etc. before the monsoon.

All this work begins by March/April and is conducted until the first week of June. However, this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the entire schedule has been disrupted. The labour required to conduct the work has also migrated back to their homes. Even after the lockdown is eased, it is difficult to say when the workers will be back to Mumbai.
