The Maharashtra government on Saturday, March 26, undertook the decision to curtail the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 13.5 per cent to 3 per cent from April 1. In light of this resolution, the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the state is likely to become cheaper, highlighted reports.

Based on accounts, the said decision was taken by Ajit Pawar, the state Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister. It is hoped that the reduction in CNG rates will be beneficial to the citizens travelling by auto-rickshaws and taxis that utilize CNG.

Speculations are also being made that the slashing of CNG VAT is aimed towards promoting the use of transport means that are environmentally friendly. In contrast to the regular means of fuel such as diesel and petrol, CNG by many is believed to be more environmentally conscious.

According to narratives, during the Maharashtra budget session, Pawar had proclaimed that the government would commence schemes to reduce CNG prices. Similarly, on the last day of the budget, he asked the Finance Department to begin the process and state a notification in the said regard.

Pawar was quoted in reports elaborating on how the Maharashtra government has worked towards giving relief to the citizens. A step in that direction he believes is through the VAT reduction in CNG. This, he says will assist considerable people who make use of auto-rickshaws and taxis to travel daily.
