Considering the sharp increase in crowds on Mumbai’s suburban local trains, the Maharashtra Government is expected to start ferry services between the city and Navi Mumbai for the public. When implemented, this service will reportedly begin from Princess Dock in Mumbai, taking the ferry all the way to Belapur.

Chief of Mumbai Port Trust, Rajeev Jalota said that the ferry service will be positioned to become one of the major modes of transportation, particularly between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. The chief added that a bulk of the work towards the ferry services has concluded with some minor works left.

Jalota also said that the ferry will have multiple stops along the way, including in Vashi, Nerul, Airoli as well as Meeth Bunder in Thane.

“Using waterways, the distance between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai can be covered in one hour. In future, Ro-Ro and RoPax services will also be launched on the route and preparation for the same is almost at the final stage,” he further added.

As for the ro-ro service, it will be utilized for the transportation of small ships, trucks, or other heavy equipment. Meanwhile, a RoPax service allows the transportation of both vehicles and passengers on the ferry.

Train mishaps and accidents due to overcrowding have only increased in the last few years. This initiative is expected to take the load off the local train infrastructure in a big way.
