The new fares for CNG-run auto-rickshaws and taxis came into force in Mumbai on Monday, March 1. As a result of this, the minimum rate for auto and taxi have increased by INR 3.

The minimum fare for a distance of 1.5 km for taxis has increased from INR 22 to INR 25, while for the auto-rickshaws it has gone up from INR 18 to INR 21. Beyond this flag down the minimum distance, passengers will have to pay INR 16.93 per km for taxis and INR 14.20 per km for auto-rickshaws.

Moreover, it has come to light that the waiting charges and night fares have also changed. Autorickshaw and taxi drivers have also been instructed to display the new fares inside the vehicles.

However, on the first day of the fare hike, the passengers were charged at the older price as the auto and taxi drivers are given a period of three months to recalibrate the meter for the new fare. Meanwhile, other drivers did not show readiness to take the revised fare due to a low number of passengers.

Besides, it is also observed that many of them are not aware of the new tariff available online due to the lack of technological knowledge.

Drivers and owners of these vehicles will have to recalibrate their electronic fare meters by May 31. They can use revised tariff cards until the meters are recalibrated, an RTO official said.

The transport department has released the revised tariff card, which is available at www.transport.maharashtra.gov.in.

The recalibration process will involve installing chips and then testing of meters by RTO officials. The recalibration of meters has commenced from March 1 and drivers have been asked to get their meters recalibrated by May 31. Hence, the new tariff card will only be valid till May 31, 2021.

The hike comes amid continuously rising fuel prices in the country. The increase in fares comes as a respite to taxi and rickshaw drivers who have been burdened with overpriced transportation fuel. The last fare hike was implemented on June 1, 2015.
