On Thursday, October 7, the Union Ministry of Railways announced that it would extend its COVID-19 guidelines for six months or until further instructions.

They stated that if anyone is found not wearing a face mask on railways premises and in trains, a fine of Rs. 500 will be charged. Indian Railways have also asked the commuters that before starting the journey, they must read the health advisory guidelines issued by various states.

According to an order issued earlier by the board, the penalty was supposed to be in place till September; however, it has got a six-month extension.

The order by the Railway Board had directed the zones to make sure that all the passengers wore face masks or face covers in trains and railway premises. It further read that zones can charge a fine up to Rs.500 under the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, 2012.

The COVID-19 guidelines are now extended till 16 April 2022 or until further instructions are received about the same.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Anurag Thakur has said that the Union Cabinet has approved a productivity-linked bonus. This productivity-linked bonus is equivalent to 78 days' wage to the eligible non-gazetted Railway employees.
