Monorail has faced adverse conditions due to financial issues since its inception. However, in order to overcome the financial crunch, MMRDA has decided to allow advertisements at monorail stations
In order to overcome the financial crisis, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has recently decided to allow the advertisers to put up advertisements at monorail stations as well as the trains. The advertisements are expected to generate a fair amount of revenue that ensures that the rail corporation does not shut down.
The country's first monorail between Wadala and Chembur has been facing financial trouble since its inception. A major reason behind the monetary issue is the maintenance and day-to-day handling of the rail service which MMRDA costs up to ₹6,00,000 per day.
Last year, a fire broke out in the monorail due to a short circuit at Mysore colony station, which had shut down the service for almost 11 months.
Meanwhile, the monorail will now have advertisements at its stations, pillars, coaches, as a part of the contingency plan by the Mumbai rail institution.
