Starting August 1, the Maharashtra Highway Police will fine motorists who cover the 50-km distance between toll plazas on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway within 37 minutes. A fine of Rs 1,000 will be imposed on such motorists in a bid to curb overspeeding on the expressway.

A senior police officer specified that the 50-km distance between the toll plazas at Khalapur and Urse takes around 37 minutes to cover within the legal speed limit.

Those who violate these norms will be issued an e-challan and first-time offenders will have to pay Rs 1,000, while repeat offenders will be penalized more. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has seen several fatal accidents so far, making this a necessary step by the State Highway Police.

The coronavirus pandemic had led to the closure of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway for regular citizens, though it has reopened since then. Highway Police has since fined several motorists on the expressway for violating traffic and road rules.

Imposing steep fines for overspeeding is an excellent way to make sure people maintain the legal speed limit, and consequently, reduce the number of fatal road accidents.
