The MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) is reportedly planning to construct a road from Bhiwandi’s Amne village to JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust). Though this will be a crucial leg of the Mumbai-Nagpur expressway, it is said that the construction of this 24-km stretch will be undertaken by the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) as part of the ongoing Vadodara-Mumbai expressway.

Sources familiar with the matter have disclosed that while the expressway will be commissioned by December 2021, authorities are planning to get this 24km stretch from JNPT to Amne ready by then. When finished, the expressway will start from JNPT, it is said. These plans were reviewed by Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray at a recent meeting.

The connectivity at Amne will prove to be crucial as goods arrive at JNPT from central India and are transported across Maharashtra. In February this year, it was reported that the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) is contemplating a major revamp of the Western Express Highway

Meanwhile, the state is demanding more funds from the central government for construction and completion of national highways across Maharashtra. State PWD minister, Ashok Chavan asked the Centre to release Rs 20,000 crores for these works.

Back in March this year, it was reported that the MSRDC is planning to construct a six-lane elevated highway near the Sion-Panvel highway in order to decongest traffic flow in the region. While the coronavirus pandemic put a hold on most infrastructure projects, civic authorities have resumed working on essential projects with proper precautions and sanitization.
