Air passengers will find it difficult while travelling to and fro from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday as both the main and secondary runways will remain shut for operations. Maintenance and repair work will be carried out for six hours which will begin from 11:00 am and will continue till 5:00 pm. Mumbai airport will be undertaking runway maintenance and repair work in two phases i.e. in October and between February and March.

It is believed that the move is likely to affect as many as 300 flights per day during the period. National carrier Air India too informed its passengers the same through a tweet on Monday.

Along with Air India, the flights of others carriers are also expected to be hit in a big way. On October 23, both the runways 09/27 and 14/32 will remain shut for operations between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. In the second phase, the maintenance and repair work on the intersection will be carried out between February 7 and March 30 (except on March 21) from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Against the declared capacity of 46, the primary runway can handle up to 50 arrivals and departures an hour, while the secondary runway has a capacity of 35 flight movements an hour. On an average, the airport handles about 1,000 flights a day.
