The railways recently conducted survey with the commuters to understand the demands, queries and other aspects of a local train commute, to which 70 per cent passengers demanded the need for additional AC train services and trips on both CR and WR. Following this, the officials held a press conference recently and mentioned that the authorities have observed these demands and hence hybrid local train coaches with AC, semi-AC and non-AC compartments will soon be made available on both Western and Central Railways.

A report regarding the same was published recently in the Indian Express

In a conversation with the media, the General Manager of WR, Alok Kansal, said that the concerned department has been working towards introducing additional AC local trains and these would be made functional in a hybrid model whereby the trains will have both AC and non-AC coaches. However, this process is in the planning stage and the department will soon test the feasibility.

On the other hand, the decision has been taken to restore the Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services between Vasai Road-Diva-Panvel sections on the Mumbai Division. Reports state that the services were shut due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown in March 2020, and the demands were frequently raised for the same to resume. Considering the same, the services will be operational from Friday, September 24, 2021.

Directives have been given to follow the COVID guidelines strictly at all times. Officials will be issuing tickets and passes to the passengers on MEMU services as per the current mandates followed on the Mumbai local trains.

Meanwhile, over 40,000 commuters have been reported to travel without tickets on the Mumbai Local Trains in one week. Report state that post the travel relaxations were announced, more than three lakh passengers who were fully vaccinated made use of the monthly pass to commence travelling.
