Mumbai locals are the backbone of the city and Mumbaikars, running with millions of passengers every day. Before lockdown, the local trains were shut down due to riots or waterlogging in the monsoon season and it was just for couple of hours. However, for the first time in the history, the local train service was shut down for months together due to a COVID-19 from March 22.
As the services for the non-essential workers and common public is yet to get a green signal, Nandkumar Deshmukh, President of Suburban Railway Passengers Ekta Mahasangh, has warned to start agitation if the local train is not started in next two days.
“Facilities have been started in phases across the state. In the same way, the general public should also be allowed to use transportation. People’s patience is now getting exhausted. As the local service is closed for commoners, they have to travel with scissors in their pocket, hence we urge them to start the local as soon as possible,” demanded Nandkumar Deshmukh.
The prevalence of COVID-19 cases started declining in Mumbai and the railway administration resumed the local services for essential workers, now extended to other staff as well with facilities.
Lockdown was implemented across the state, including Mumbai, against the backdrop of coronavirus. As a result, all facilities and transport services, especially Mumbai's lifeline local service, were shut down.
