Mumbai division of Central Railways (CR) has installed UN-recognised technology ‘Meghdoot’ machines, which are used to convert water vapour in the air into potable water, at six railway stations in the city.

Explaining about the same, an official stated that Meghdoot, an atmospheric water generator (AWG), is a device that extracts water from ambient air using the science of condensation. This water will now be provided in kiosks at railway stations.

To start with, 17 kiosks have been installed at six stations with major footfalls, including five each at CSMT and Dadar, four at Thane, and one each at Kurla, Ghatkopar and Vikhroli. Train users can refill their bottles at these kiosks.

A 1-litre bottle can be refilled for INR 12, while refilling a 500-ml bottle will cost INR 8, officials added.

Reports further mentioned that a contract for setting up these machines has been awarded to Maithri Aquatech Pvt Ltd under NINFRIS policy for a period of five years. License fee of this innovative project is INR 25,50,000 per annum, in which INR 1,50,000 per year for each kiosk at 6 stations.

The official also informed that these Meghdoot machines are research-driven and it does not need source water. Also the technology is environmentally-friendly with zero maintenance.
