Monorail to remain close for an indefinite period, informed MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. Mumbai’s monorail system, long criticised as a "white elephant," suffered its third breakdown this month on Monday, once again leaving passengers stranded and raising fresh concerns about its reliability and viability.
According to a statement from the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), a technical snag caused the train to halt mid-track between Anthill and GTB Nagar stations around 7:16 am. Seventeen passengers were on board at the time. They were safely transferred to another train and moved to the next station by 7:40 am. Services were fully restored by 8:50 am, according to the BMC.
This is the third such incident in less than a month in August, two monorail trains had also stalled mid-track due to power failures, disrupting service for over 1,100 passengers.
Low Ridership & High Costs Continue to Haunt the ProjectSince its launch, the Mumbai monorail has struggled with low ridership, technical glitches, and financial losses. Originally projected to carry 1.25–3 lakh passengers daily, the system currently manages only around 18,000–19,000 daily riders — a fraction of its intended capacity.
