In order to compete with private bus operators and provide an alternative to train commuters, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is expected to introduce 50 non air-conditioned sleeper buses by April 2023.

These buses will be introduced on the Mumbai-Konkan route. And a prototype bus is likely to be ready in the 45 days.

The buses will be introduced on a gross-cost contract basis, meaning the fare will be collected by the MSRTC authority. The contractor provides the drivers while the authority pays a fixed sum to the contractors for providing the service.

Here are the features of this bus:

Keeping in mind the convenience of frequent travellers and working-class people, most of these buses will depart in the evening. A timetable will also be prepared considering the same.

The new buses will be equipped with all 40 sleeper berths.

These buses will also be equipped with facilities like a reading lamp, a night lamp, charging points, fans and two huge storage compartments. The buses also have fire safety measures.

With such buses, the transport body is also trying to provide last mile connectivity between the talukas and villages of the state to the economic capital.

In addition, on Tuesday, August 16, the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced to allow people above 75 of years to travel for free by MSRTC buses.

While announcing to the media, Shinde said that this decision was taken at the state cabinet meeting as the state is celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
