In a major boost to suburban rail commuters, new air-conditioned (AC) train services and longer 15-coach locals will be introduced on Mumbai’s suburban network from May 1.
Railway authorities will roll out 26 additional AC local services across the Western and Harbour lines. A portion of these will replace existing non-AC services, aiming to improve passenger comfort amid rising temperatures and increasing demand for air-conditioned travel.
At the same time, several 12-coach trains on the Western line will be upgraded to 15-coach services, significantly enhancing passenger capacity. The move is expected to ease congestion, especially during peak hours, on some of the busiest routes in the city.
Officials said the expansion is part of a broader effort to modernise Mumbai’s suburban railway system and address chronic overcrowding. Some longer trains are also expected to operate on extended routes, including the Virar–Dahanu corridor, where commuter numbers have been steadily rising.
However, railway sources noted that not all stations currently have platforms long enough to accommodate 15-coach trains, which may affect stoppage patterns at certain locations.
