In the last few years, the number of vehicles on Mumbai roads has constantly increased. Traffic jams have become a constant for the city. In addition to this, there is work of Mumbai metro and expansion going on various parts of the city that is adding further pressure on the cramped roads. Despite all this, various vehicles are parked alongside the roads which cause inconvenience and adds to the traffic jams.

To deal with the issue, Mumbai Traffic Police has decided to disallow parking of vehicles on roads situated within 500 meters of public parking lots for the coming three months. The regulation will be applicable for the main road as well as the inner road.

Using their Floor Space Index, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) constructed new public parking lots. The aim behind erecting the new parking lots was to decongest roads and develop a practice among the citizens to utilise public parking services instead of unauthorised parking.  Accordingly, the civic body has built a new parking lot at Dadar's Shivaji Park area. This is assisted the vehicular traffic to function smoothly in the area.

Therefore, the civic body has issued a list of roads where the vehicles cannot be parked for three months. The regulation will be implemented on a trial basis for three months, i.e. between February 29 and May 31.
