The speed limit of the JJ flyover has been increased to 60 kmph, with a maximum of 35 kmph around the curves.

Making the journey on the the JJ Flyover speedier, Mumbai Traffic Police on Friday announced new speed limits for vehicles plying on the route. The traffic police also changed the speed limit for vehicles travelling on flyovers, bridges and highways in the city.

An official said that the decision was taken keeping in mind, the rise in number of vehicles in the city and to prevent accidents. He further added that under the Motor Vehicles Act, additional commissioner of police (traffic) Pravin Padwal had revised speed limits on arterial roads.

The speed limit of the JJ flyover has been increased to 60 kmph, with a maximum of 35 kmph around the curves. The decision was made after there were repeated complaints of congestion on the route. Issuing a notification, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) changed speed limits on 10 other routes.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has set an absolute speed limit of 70 kmph in urban areas. However, the speed limit on Bandra Worli Sea Link and Eastern Freeway is 80 kmph. On the other hand, motorists can drive upto 70 kmph on Eastern Express Highway, Sion Panvel Highway, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and Lalbaug flyover.

Earlier, in order to curb the accidents from happening on the J.J. Flyover, Mumbai Traffic Police had decided to impose a speed limit for the vehicles passing through the route. The move fruited for the traffic police as they were successful in avoiding the mishaps completely on the flyover. But the drivers had expressed their disappointment over the imposed speed limit.

The police had put a speed limit of 20 km/hr at one turning on the flyover, whereas the drivers were asked to restrict their speed to 30 km/hr at five turnings
