In yet another attempt to ease the congestion and parking problems in the city, Mumbai Traffic Police has started taking strict action against vehicles in no-parking areas. This exercise is going on for the last few days.

Besides, the traffic police department has also declared a 24-hour ‘no parking’ for heavy vehicles, including luxury buses, in the jurisdictions of eight police stations in South Mumbai, including MRA Marg, Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Azad Maidan, Marine Drive, LT Marg and VP Road.

There has been a huge increase in the number of vehicles in and around Mumbai. At present, there are around 36 lakh vehicles in the city, due to this the main roads and alleys in Mumbai are getting congested. Besides, the issue of parking has also come up and as there is no space available for parking of vehicles, it has been observed that traffic is parked on the road. As a result, there is a lack of parking facilities.

Moreover, there are many old buildings that do not have individual parking spots. Taking note of the parking issues of such motorists, traffic police have agreed to provide no-objection certificates (NOCs) to allow vehicle owners to park their vehicles in the street near their residence.

Proposals from Cuff Parade

The traffic police informed that three proposals seeking permission for street parking were received from the Cuff Parade area. The traffic police said that they are looking into this matter and taking a physical inspection to ensure that those seeking permission do not really have parking. The traffic cops would seek answers to these questions -- Is public parking lot far from their place? How many vehicles can be parked at the respective places? Will it be a hindrance to traffic?

Fees have to be paid to the Municipal Corporation

The Mumbai civic body has said that this initiative will have to pay a fee for street parking. In order to ensure the safety of the vehicles, other unauthorised vehicles will not be allowed to park at that place. However, the responsibility will be on the concerned society to look into this matter.
