People travelling outside Mumbai can now be relieved as they can board outstation trains from Jogeshwari railway station early next year. Two additional platforms costing INR 70 crores is built by the Western Railways (WR).

Along with three interchanging railway lines, the two railway platforms and one island platform will be used to operate these trains at Jogeshwari station. The proposal on operations of the trains is sent to the Ministry of Railways by the zonal railway manager. After getting approval, the outstation trains will start operating.

Earlier, the railways had planned to operate nearly 100 outstation trains towards Gujarat and North India from Jogeshwari. However, demand has been low for outstation trains owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A senior Western Railway official said that they would be reassessing the number of trains for operation from Jogeshwari as they have seen a decrease in demand for these trains.

Recently, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Railway Minister, gave a nod to plans for further enhancing the city's suburban system. CR and WR will be installing more escalators, lifts and logistic parks. WR has decided to replace 20 12-car locals with 15-car trains on the slow corridor between Andheri and Virar in December.

Meanwhile, on an experimental basis, WR is thinking to permit passengers with regular tickets to travel in the AC trains and pay the difference in fare during the journey.
