Mumbai’s Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova Metro 1 line is facing heavy congestion as daily ridership has crossed five lakh. The four-coach trains are struggling to manage the growing number of commuters, especially during morning and evening rush hours. To tackle this, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) has proposed adding two more coaches to each train.
The company has shared a proposal for this through the India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL) to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL). If approved, this expansion will increase train capacity and ease the pressure on passengers along the busy east-west corridor.
At present, each four-coach train carries around 1,750 passengers. Stations like Andheri, Western Express Highway, and Ghatkopar see heavy crowding with passengers packed into compartments.
With two additional coaches, the capacity is expected to rise to nearly 2,250 per trip. This will provide more space for commuters and help manage peak-hour rush. The addition is also likely to improve train frequency and passenger flow.
Financial hurdles had delayed the expansion earlier. MMOPL faced debt issues and owed more than INR 1,700 crore to six banks. The company approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) after declaring its inability to repay the amount. The debt was later transferred to NARCL for restructuring. Now, the proposed coach addition awaits approval from NARCL and other financial institutions.
