According to sources, the railway administration has resumed cracking down on those who litter the railway tracks.

Moreover, the Central Railways has already sent notices to at least 650 people living near the tracks. In addition, the people who are found littering have been asked for a large amount of penalty after the expiry of the notice period.

The notice alleges that household waste was dumped at the railway boundary as well as on the tracks. The garbage from the railway boundary obstructs the sewers adjacent to the tracks. Often plastic and other debris get stuck in the motor and other machinery of the mail-express wheels, including the locomotive which hinders rail traffic.

Meanwhile, 19 waste disposal sites have been identified on the main and harbour routes on the Central Railway. This includes space at Diva-Mumbra, Diva-Kopar railway stations between Masjid, Byculla, Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg. A notice has been issued to 650 families who dumped garbage with the help of railway security forces.

On the other hand, the Indian Railways had earlier launched a 'Zero Scrap Mission'. Under this campaign, the material management department of Central Railway ensures that each Division, Workshop and Shed in Central Railway is free from scrap materials. According to reports, the Central Railway Administration has earned around INR 225 crores by selling scrap metal between April 2020 and January 2021.

The scrap metal includes scrap rails, railing materials, condemned coaches, trolleys, engines, old coaches, freight coaches, wagons. With this, Central Railway sold scrap worth INR 224.94 crores. Moreover, it comes across as the zero scrap campaign has helped the railways generate good revenue.
