The Indian Railways have set up a reservation cum help desk at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai for stranded students /passengers arriving in special flight from Ukraine.

Amid the war-like situation between Russia and Ukraine, India has been evacuating its citizens through special flights from Romania, Hungary and Poland as the Ukrainian airspace has been shut down since February 24.

Releasing an official statement, the Railways stated that they have opened the desk near Gate No. 4 at Level P4 of Terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport.

The help booths will provide assistance to students wanting to travel by train within Maharashtra or across the country from Mumbai. Senior railway officials of both Central Railways (CR) and Western Railways (WR) will be deployed at the airport to help the students.

While the students arriving from Mumbai by flights are provided free tickets, the railways are contemplating and finalising the provision of providing free rail journeys to the students.

A railway official said that providing free transport by trains to the passengers is under consideration as many students are not residents of Mumbai. A decision will be taken soon that will pan India.

Approximately 8,000 Indians, mainly students, are stranded in Ukraine, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Tuesday, March 1.

The seventh flight carrying 182 Indians stranded in Ukraine, reached Mumbai from Bucharest in Romania as part of the "Operation Ganga" on Tuesday, March 1.

Earlier on February 26, an Air India flight from Bucharest, Romania to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) landed with 219 young passengers on board. Of these, nearly 30 were from Mumbai while the rest were from Maharashtra

In addition to this, on February 23, state Minister of Higher Education and Technical Education, Uday Samant remarked that 1200 students from Maharashtra are stuck in Ukraine. Thus, he requested prompt intervention to safely bring back these students.
