The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is in the process of preparing the migration strategy, which will be adopted by the railways, as they will be procuring air-conditioned (AC) local trains for the Mumbai suburban network. 

The migration strategy, which includes the operation and functioning of the railways, will be adopted while introducing the AC local trains on Western and Central lines. They have decided to hire a consultancy for the same.

Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3 and Project-3A, procurement of nearly 238 AC local rakes is approved. Earlier, the MRVC had given a detailed presentation about introducing AC local trains to the Minister of Railways.

Upon receiving approval from the Railway Board, the MRVC will be floating a tender for the procurement of AC rakes. In future, the trains in Mumbai suburbs will be fully air-conditioned, for which the railway needs to study and prepare a strategy on how to migrate or shift to the AC local trains.

For financing, the Union government has applied from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) towards the cost of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) III. It also includes the new AC local trains. The AC rakes are proposed to be procured by 2024, having a lifespan of 25 years.

Meanwhile, Union Railways Ministry is also planning to bring down the prices of AC tickets and permit passengers with regular to travel in the AC trains, on an experimental basis.
