The Maharashtra government has decided to provide the licensed auto-rickshaw drivers across Mumbai financial assistance of INR 1,500.

Earlier, a meeting was held on April 19, under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar wherein it was decided to provide these daily wage workers with financial assistance in view of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown imposed.

According to sources, the auto-rickshaw drivers will only have to register their vehicle number, license number and Aadhaar number on the online system without submitting any documents. This information will be then authenticated on the computer. Meanwhile, the mechanism has been developed by ICICI Bank which is in the final stages. From May 22, rickshaw pullers will be able to apply for the same online. Moreover, an online presentation on the application process will be made to the representatives of rickshaw associations in all the districts of the state on May 21.

Furthermore, the one-time subsidy will be credited to the respective bank accounts of the rickshaw pullers whose Aadhaar numbers match the bank account, the Transport Commissioner's Office informed.

In the midst of the massive spike in the number of coronavirus cases, the Maharashtra government imposed fresh curbs and a night curfew from Sunday, March 28, which has caused distress among businesses that are associated with the hospitality, food and beverages sector fearing that stringent rules could cripple the industry. Moreover, hawkers in the city have also said the night restrictions will see them losing 70 to 80 per cent of their revenue as sales are high during the evening time.
