A major block will take place in December on Mumbai's suburban railway network. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) and the Central Railway (CR) will undertake railway blocks starting from 18 hours to 72 hours.

It will be done to complete the fifth and sixth railway lines between Mumbai, Thane and Diva railway stations. These blocks will be operated on different railway sections between Thane and Diva to complete the railway line work.

To undertake such a railway block, permission is required from the railway board, which is the apex body of all zonal railways. A senior MRVC official has stated that they have already discussed with the Central Railway on the block section and have sought permissions for the same.

A CR official has said that the block will cause minimum inconvenience to passengers and they will also ask the Maharashtra government to operate additional buses during the block period.

It is not the first time when such a block will take place. In September, CR took a 10-hour block between Kalwa and Mumbra railway stations to complete the fifth and sixth railway lines.

This project is a part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP 2B), and once it is completed, new railway lines will enable segregation of outstation and local trains on the Central Railway till Kalyan.
