With the government continuing its 2-passenger rule for taxis, the kali peeli taxi drivers in Mumbai are disheartened. This comes at a time when the local train services are open to those fully vaccinated in the city. It is a largely held opinion that after using the services of the local trains, commuters ply by taxis to reach their final destination.

Based on a report by the Times of India, the Mumbai Taximen’s Union has voiced a protest and have requested the state’s transport ministry, that the rule be removed and the taxis be permitted to ply with four passengers. In the petition, it is elaborated that the removal of the current rule and increasing the number of passengers permitted, will benefit the commuters themselves.

According to the account, A L Quadros the taxi union leader is of the opinion that taxis play a pivotal role on feeder routes from railway stations to major office locations that include those located in south Mumbai such as Colaba, Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade and Kamala Mills. He went on to further enunciate that the drivers of the kali peeli taxis in Mumbai have suffered monumental damage during the coronavirus pandemic with a loss of nearly 70% in earnings in the past few months.
