With the deadline of compulsory seatbelt for all passengers is nearing, the taxi union has written to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) requesting him to withdraw this rule.

The kaali-peeli union said that it is not easy for taxi drivers to follow this rule.

Justifying the demand, he further said that taxis mostly operate within municipal limits and the majority of passengers travel for short distances. Therefore, Central Motor Vehicle Rule should not be applied to black and yellow taxis.

In the letter, they also mentioned that the kaali-peelis should not be compared with private and central taxis. The accident rate is zero in Mumbai metropolis. The average speed of a vehicle in the city is less than 12 kmph. Taking these issues into consideration, they requested to not make seatbelts compulsory for rear seat passengers.

Apart from that, taxis are allowed to carry four passengers and three of them occupy rear seats. Car manufacturers have provided only two seat belts on the rear seat. Hence, the third passenger can't wear the seat belts, he pointed out.

For those unversed, as per traffic police order effective from November 1, if the passengers in a four-wheeler vehicles are found without seat belts then the driver would be fined INR 500.
