The 94-km Mumbai-Pune Expressway has emerged as a death trap owing to the number of deaths and injuries. Between 2010 and 2016, almost 1,323 people were killed in 4,634 accidents.

Considering the increasing accidents, the state home department is planning to make the expressway a zero-fatality by 2020 by launching a trauma care centre which is ready but not operational. The aim is to provide medical assistance during the ‘golden hour’ to save lives.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has asked charitable institutions or hospitals to come forward to run the trauma care center on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

The center at Ozarde near Talegaon is ready for the last three years with operation theatre and recovery rooms, and two helipads. But, there are no doctors or paramedical staff to treat accident victims.

According to MSRDC’s joint managing director, Kiran Kurundkar, in 2017, a few organisations had come forward to run the center but they decided to invite bidders. The process of shortlisting institutions will take a month.

Officials added that in 2017, Mumbai’s Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust had agreed to fund the medical equipment but they passed a resolution of supplying the equipment to a charitable hospital.
