In yet another welcoming news for Ulhasnagar residents, their long-pending demand seems to be getting fulfilled as they will get Sindhu Nagar station on the Mumbai Metro line 5.

Recently, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority decided to extend the Metro line 5 from Thane to Kalyan, it will extend it to Ulhasnagar via Khadakapada.

The Metro line 5 project, which is 24-km long, costs INR 8,416 crores. For this, appointment of a consultant will be considered and a proposal has been prepared.

This development was confirmed by BJP MLA Kumar Ailani from Ulhasnagar during a press conference.

Explaining further he stated that before the Partition, the Sindhis community was in Sindh (now in Pakistan), from where many came to India and most settled down in Ulhasnagar. Since then, they dreamt that Ulhasnagar city or its railway station should be named Sindhu Nagar. Sindhu nagar was first suggested in 1948 for the Refugee Kalyan Camp. There was also an agitation to name the city as Sindhu Nagar at that time. Then governor-general of India, C Rajagopalachari, had first suggested to name the city as Ulhasnagar. Once law and order was in place, the city council could rename the city to Sindhu nagar but this never happened.

Besides, Rajesh Badaria, a former corporator of Ulhasnagar, says that the introduction of metro service will not only reduce the traffic problem in the city, but also make people's journey in Mumbai more comfortable. Professor Lal Tanwani says that the coming of Metro will also benefit the students.
