In view of the recent surge in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray government is contemplating imposing a night curfew to curb the virus, said state Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar. He also added that the decision would be soon taken in this regards.

This statement comes after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a review meeting in the presence of BMC officials on Wednesday, February 24.

The entire Vidarbha region is witnessing a spike in cases. The government has already declared a lockdown in Amravati, Wardha and Yavatmal. If coronavirus cases continue to jump, the government needs to take strict measures like a night curfew in other parts of the state.

Moreover, an order to enforce the coronavirus norms has been given to all district magistrates. They have also been authorised to take decisions in view of the pandemic situation, said Wadettiwar.

The state government will ask district administrations, including collectors and municipal commissioners, to take a final call on lockdowns depending on conditions in their areas.

“All places like marriage halls, markets, cinema halls and others where crowds gather would be closed, if a curfew will be imposed. The surge is due to a majority of people becoming careless and not following COVID-19 protocols like wearing masks and maintaining distancing,” Wadettiwar said.

“We are also considering regulating vegetable markets. Such places may be allowed to remain open from 10 am to 5 pm with restrictions. Moreover, plans are afoot to reduce the number of local trains to ease the congestion,” he added.

The state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have taken steps to curb the increasing numbers of cases in Mumbai.
