The Railway Administration has introduced a number of facilities to make the journey of passengers safe and comfortable. In a first, the Western Railway has decided to start air-conditioned salons at six railway stations including Mumbai Central.

With this, now commuters will have to option to get their hair styled, trim their beard or get a beauty treatment at the station. At present, space for salons has been earmarked at Mumbai Central, Andheri, Goregaon, Kandivli and Borivli in Mumbai and Surat in Gujarat.

The salon operator will be allowed to keep his shop open from 6 am to 10 pm.

The initiative has been taken to utilise the space available at the railway station to meet the daily needs of the passengers. These saloons will be set up in places where passenger congestion at the railway station will not be a problem. Besides, this is another attempt by railway to earn revenue. WR feels there will be a good response for the salon as commuter footfall in Mumbai is huge.

For the salon, 256 square feet of space will be provided on lease at each of the selected railway stations. This agreement will be for five years. The maintenance cost of this place will be binding on the concerned.

If the contractor violates the rules or any complaint is received from the passengers, a penalty of INR 10,000 will be imposed on the contractor. It has been made mandatory to have a complaint book in every saloon at the railway station.
