A new foot over bridge (FOB) has been opened by the Western Railway authorities at the Bandra Railway Station, making it accessible to the commuters right away. As per the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Western Railway, Sumit Thakur, this new FOB is 80 meters long and six meters wide. This FOB has been built in the same location as Old Middle Truss FOB which was deemed unsafe in an audit report of IIT-Bombay’s survey.

Given that this is one of the most heavily used FOBs at the station, it has been joined with an existing 6 meters FOB, taking the total width of middle FOBs in Bandra to 12 meters, Thakur mentioned.

This FOB will provide connectivity to all platforms of the railway station including the eastern and western portions. This bridge was reportedly constructed at a cost of ₹5 crore. “The dismantling of old FOB as well as the construction of new FOB was very difficult on account of it being located between FOB on the south side and heritage structure on the north side which was compounded by a heavy rush of passengers during peak hours near this FOB,” Thakur said.

“So the work was planned in stages to minimize commuter inconvenience at Bandra and even stop boards were shifted at PF 4, 5 to control the rush,” he added while also pointing out that work on this new FOB went through even as there was a scarcity of manpower, particularly during the lockdown.

Speaking on other FOBs that are in a dilapidated condition across the city, Thakur said that six old FOBs have been dismantled during the lockdown period this year while six new FOBs and a Skywalk will be established. These new structures will come under the Mumbai Suburban section of Western Railway.
