Western Railway Plans to set up small Gardens at 36 Railway Stations

Western Railway (WR) is planning to set up small gardens in and around 36 stations in Mumbai. The project is expected to be completed by March 2020.

Local trains are considered to be the lifeline of Mumbai. Lakhs of commuters use it on a daily basis. In order to increase the greenery around the stations, Western Railway (WR) is planning to set up small gardens in and around 36 stations in Mumbai. As per reports, the project is expected to be completed by March 2020. 

The authorities are planning to utilise open spaces efficiently and make maximum use of sustainable energy resources. Efforts are being made to make 'green stations'. The saplings or garden can be set up at ticket booking counters, wide Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) and at free spaces in the railway platforms.

If the project goes as planned, gardens may be set up at these 36 stations: 

Churchgate, Nallasopara, Boisar, Jogeshwari, Malad, Kandivali, Marine Lines, Charani Road, Grant Road, Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, Dadar, Matunga Road, Mahim, Khar, Santacruz, Bandra, Villeparle, Andheri, Goregaon, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Naigaon, Vasai Road, Palghar, Virar, Umargaon, Vapi, Bilimora, Udhwara, Navsari, Udhana and Surat. 

Moreover, Western Railways had recently announced a renovation for renowned and historic stations like Charni Road, Grant Road, and Marine Lines. It is said the renovation is expected to be completed by 2022. The authorities mentioned that Grant Road and Charni Road stations will begin work in Phase 1 while Marine Lines station will be part of Phase 2. The cost of renovation for the Grant Road and Charni Road stations has been estimated to be Rs 5.31 crores and Rs 3.74 crores respectively.
