The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is preparing to start work on the much-awaited fifth and sixth lines between Virar and Borivali on December 1.

The first important step of the project involves clearing the path by removing structures that are obstructing the proposed corridor alignment.

The suburban network of the Western Railway (WR) now consists of four lines from Churchgate to Mumbai Central and Borivali to Virar. Currently, there is also a fifth line from Mumbai Central to Borivali and a sixth line running between Khar and Goregaon.

Regional rail travel is expected to undergo a radical transformation with the ambitious proposal to extend the sixth line to Borivali by the end of 2025. WR's operating efficiency is expected to significantly increase as a result of this massive line development, which aims to effectively separate mail-express and suburban section rail traffic between Mumbai Central and Virar.

The accomplishment was celebrated by SC Gupta, chairman and Managing Director of MRVC, who said that this marks the initiation of the first contract awarded for this project, executed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A.

To make room for the extra tracks, 47 railway buildings, including booking offices, relay rooms, restroom blocks, and offices, will have to be removed in the next phase. On December 10, the building of foot-over bridges is expected to begin with the bidding procedure.

MRVC has successfully finished the survey to identify the best location for the additional lines, and it has sent the collector a proposal for an acquisition of the site. In addition, a plan to deal with tree removal for the development of the lines has been presented to local authorities.

In other updates, MRVC is currently handling the ongoing infrastructure upgrade work at three stations: Ghatkopar, Khar, and Kandivali. To curb air pollution caused by this construction work, MRVC got a green net cover.

MRVC said that special measures have been taken not just for projects under the Mumbai district but also for all other projects across the MMR. The green net, also known as scaffolding netting fabric, is used on construction sites to help limit the spillage of debris and the spread of dust.

According to Sunil Udasi, MRVC's chief public relations officer, construction work is underway in Mumbai at Khar, Kandivli, and Ghatkopar. At Ghatkopar, their plinth/ground work is complete, and the majority of the work is being done on the deck level. They have cleared the site of any debris. They are already using water sprinkling processes onsite, primarily where earthwork is being done, and will increase the frequency if necessary. They reuse waste material for backfilling in most cases, but all site supervisors of station building and improvement works, for example, have been advised to dispose of garbage immediately, he said.

He stated that they are ensuring that the cars are PUC-compliant and that all personnel at the site are required to wear masks and PPE suits.
